School Testing Program

ST. THOMAS MORE

POLICIES

TITLE: 406.02.02 School Testing Program

The following assessment programs are in place at St. Thomas More School in compliance with Archdiocesan and state policies and professional standards. Students in grades 2, 4, 6, and 8 take the “Terra Nova Achievement” and “In-View Cognitive Abilities” Tests in the fall of each year. This combination of tests allows performance to be compared to predicted scores. Students in grades 3, 5 and 7 take only the “Terra Nova” so that progress from grade to grade can be monitored. Individual results are reported to parents and instructional staff; class and school results are provided to the Parish Education Commission, and Archdiocesan School Office.

A Writing Competency Test is administered in grades 3, 5 and 7. Results are maintained in the student cumulative record file and shared with parents. Other tests mandated by the State of Ohio or Archdiocese of Cincinnati will be administered as required.

Dibels (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is used three times during the school year to assess basic reading skills for students in K-4. This allows early identification and remediation for students who are experiencing difficulty learning to read.

“Accelerated Reader” is a software program used to encourage students to read quality literature. Students earn points for reading a book and passing a quiz taken on a computer. Results are tracked by student over their academic career, beginning in first grade. Teachers set quarterly goals, which may be used as a part of the reading grade, or recognized in other ways.
